AFC Bournmouth – Judge’s Commentary post-UK Facade Awards 2025

We were recently shortlisted for an award at the UK Facade Awards 2025. Sadly, we didn’t win our category this year, but we are so proud of our AFC Bournmouth project that we reached out to one of the judges, Peter Johnson, Group Chairman of Vivalda Group (https://vivalda.co.uk/) for his valuable feedback, as an expert in the sector.

Peter kindly reverted and the following are his comments on the project and our work:

“As a judge for the UK Facade Awards, I review many impressive submissions each year, yet every so often a project stands out for the clarity of its architectural intent and the precision of its delivery. The Canford Magna training facility for AFC Bournemouth is one of those projects.

People of a certain era will remember Bournemouth for the goal scoring exploits of Ted MacDougall and Phil Boyer, and for once owning the longest name in the Football League. The club has evolved considerably since then. Its rise to the Premier League is well documented, and this training centre signals a club determined to stay there.

The design carries a series of subtle footballing references. The sweeping curve across the primary elevation calls to mind a free kick curling past a defensive wall. The grounded solidity of the side elevation feels like a compact back line that is not easily breached. The upward rise above the main entrance reflects a club on a steep ascent.

What elevates this building is not only the concept, but the discipline with which the facade has been delivered. Regency Facades took responsibility for the full facade design and installation. Their work on the sand toned cladding ties the structure back to the coastal character of the club, while preserving the clean lines that define the architecture.

For a building that relies so heavily on continuous geometry, even the smallest misalignment would disrupt the visual flow. During assessment, I looked closely at panel junctions, tolerances, and changes in plane. The consistency achieved across the installation demonstrates a level of workmanship that is both rare and commendable. It is this precision that placed Regency Facades on the shortlist for the UK Facade Awards 2025.

Canford Magna is more than a training facility. It is a physical expression of ambition, confidence, and permanence. Regency Facades have supported that ambition with a facade that performs as strongly as it presents.”

Our thanks to Peter for his valuable feedback – at Regency Facades we are constantly learning and evolving – and we are very proud of the quality of our work, on every project.
